CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Lora Lacy

Lora looked down at her phone. It was shifting slightly on the couch as it vibrated from the call. She picked it up to get a closer look. It was a number she didn’t recognize so she laid it back down on the armrest of her couch. Every single incoming call would boil up an overflowing pot of emotions, the main one being hope. The last few weeks she had been so confused. Was she supposed to be sad? Was she supposed to be angry? Worried? Where had Carter gone?

When Carter had disappeared, a major internal investigation had ensued at QPRC. It was all too suspicious for an employee with access to such important information to vanish. Plus, it had been the same day the tests had finished. It was immediately suspected that he had stolen data or had somehow sabotaged the data. So far the investigation found nothing concrete. Only theory after theory was produced by the investigating team. Numerous other wild theories were produced by the other employees and they spread like the rumors of a high school hallway.

Her well-known relationship with Carter brought her into the spotlight as well. She had been temporarily suspended from all of her projects and was tasked with doing clerical work in the human resource offices until the security team could get to the bottom of it. The problem was, what were they getting to the bottom of? They only had their unfounded theories.

Lora also had to speak with detectives from the local police department. Quantum Physics Research Center had officially reported Carter Bold as a missing person. She immediately volunteered to help as much as she could. She wanted Carter back. She needed answers.

Carter’s landlord let the police into his home and nothing had been found. The fact that none of his personal items were in the home helped them move foul play to the back burner in regards to his disappearance. They believed that he left on his own.

The only information the detectives found was a file that Pearl Gate passed onto them. Other than that, it seemed Carter didn’t exist. So far, any further investigation into the background provided in the file lead to nowhere. All the leads brought them to dead ends.

Lora, not having discovered her own beauty until her mid-twenties, spent much of the years that teens and young adults usually date being teased for being the goofy, nerdy girl at school. She had a few boyfriends over the following years but she hadn’t clicked with any of them like she had with Carter. It was as if he was the final gear placement of an intricate, handmade watch. Everything ran with precision once it was in place. Now it was as if a hammer smashed that wonderful work of art and she had to scrounge around to bring as many pieces back together as she could. She had loved Carter dearly. It was clear to her now more than ever.

Lora drew her legs up under her chin.
